Mullingar is a market town (population c. 12,000) with a rich heritage dating back to Norman Times (c. 12th. Century). It is the Principal Town of Westmeath and with it's great variety of restaurants, pubs and nightlife, offers the visitor many opportunities to sample the hospitality, warmth of the Irish welcome, fabulous cuisine, not forgetting our world-famous stout, beer and whiskey! Located in the very heart of Ireland, virtually no other area boasts as wide a range and variety of good quality angling. As well as the excellent fishing, there are many other sporting and cultural attractions for visitors: The County abounds in first class Golf Courses in spectacular settings, delightful Castles, Stately Homes and Gardens open to the public, each which have played an important role in the history of the County. You can follow a Bog Rail Tour, take a trip on the River Shannon (at 212 miles/ 340 kms approx.- the longest river in the British Isles and Ireland), Pony Trek through wooded trails along the lake shore, go back in time during your visit to the stunning historical village of Fore, sample whiskey in Kilbeggan from the only small pot still remaining in Ireland, or join in an evening of music and craic in a traditional Irish pub. There is plenty to experience and see in County Westmeath. For those of you with non angling partners, Alan's wife, Rosanne, a registered tour guide for the county, can organise alternative activities and sight- seeing itineraries. |
