It is easy to see why the lake inspired that most
enduring and magical of Irish legends,"The Children Of Lir ".
During the winter, the lake is turned into a sea of white as thousands of migratory Swans
colonise the area: some from as far away as Russia and Siberia. The lake is
important as a wintering site for migratory species such as the Whooper Swan and various
species of duck including Widgeon, Tufted Duck and Golden Eye. Derravaragh is also a
breeding ground for resident species such as the Mute Swan, the Great Crested Grebe,
Coote, Moorehen, Mallard, Teal and Heron. Other much loved species, which frequent the
lakeshore and surrounding hills, are the Barn Owl, Sparrow Hawk, Kestrel and the
Kingfisher. The haunting cry of the Curlew can be heard across the still water, whilst
flocks of Lapwing twist and turn in formation, during their aerial display. |
